Internal-standard quantitative XRD

XRD amorphous content analysis

Estimate amorphous or non-crystalline content from powder XRD data using a documented internal-standard addition and quantitative full-pattern refinement.

Internal-standard routeKnown standard addition provides the calculation basis.
Crystalline phase tableModelled phases are reported together with corrected fractions.
Method documentationCalculation basis, assumptions and limitations are stated clearly.

When this analysis is appropriate

The method is useful when a sample contains glassy, poorly ordered or otherwise unmodelled material and the specimen was prepared with a known amount of a suitable crystalline standard.

01

Cement and clinker

Assess crystalline phases and non-crystalline material in cementitious systems with documented standard addition.

02

Slag, ash and minerals

Compare glassy or amorphous fractions across industrial by-products, geological powders and processed materials.

03

Treatment series

Track changes in crystalline and non-crystalline fractions across activation, heating, reaction or ageing conditions.

Required preparation information

Standard identity and purityFor example, a well-characterised corundum standard with stated purity.
Added mass fractionRecord whether the percentage is based on the original sample mass or the final sample-plus-standard mixture.
Mixing procedureDescribe weighing, grinding, homogenisation and any preparation steps that may affect representativeness.
Raw data and scan conditionsProvide the numerical pattern, radiation, angular range, step size and acquisition details.

Not interchangeable: broad-hump integration and internal-standard Rietveld analysis are different approaches. The selected method and reported quantity must match the available experiment.

Typical output

Corrected composition table

Crystalline phase fractions, internal-standard recovery and calculated amorphous/unmodelled fraction using an explicitly stated basis.

Fitting and interpretation

Full-pattern fitting plot, refinement indicators and a concise discussion of trends, uncertainty sources and comparability across samples.

Quoted after preparation review

Internal-standard projects are checked for standard fraction, calculation basis, phase models and consistency across the sample set before a fixed price is confirmed.

Common questions

Can amorphous content be calculated without adding a standard?

A broad feature can be compared semi-quantitatively, but an absolute internal-standard result requires a known standard addition or another justified calibration strategy.

Can a standard be added after the original scan?

The sample must be mixed with the standard and measured as that prepared mixture. A standard value cannot simply be inserted into an earlier pattern.

Can different sample groups be compared?

Yes, when the standard, preparation basis, measurement conditions and refinement strategy are consistent enough for the intended comparison.
